About the artist
She comes from a family with an artistic sensitivity: her father was an architect with Antwerp origins, and her mother was an interior decorator from Brussels. Her artistic curiosity developed at a very young age and it became visible early on.
Supported by her environment at the age of fifteen, she started her education at Sint-Lukas Art School in Brussels.
Around the time of graduating as a sculptor, she attracted the attention of several galleries and began collaborating with them. However, she also lost her father during that same period — a major emotional blow that deeply affected her career. She stopped creating entirely for two years, taking time for mourning and reflection. This was the beginning of the influence of Buddhist philosophy in her work.
She fulfilled one of her greatest personal dreams: living in an autonomous eco-community. She moved to Essen, where she lived with friends in a private forest setting, surrounded by nature and silence, allowing her to continue developing her sculptural practice in a more peaceful environment.
Here she also began playing the West African harp, a practice she later integrated into live performances during exhibition openings.
In 2008 she created 'De Moeskopkes', four sculpted portraits of eccentric customers (“Moeskoppers”) for Café Moeskop installed on the exterior façade overlooking Dageraadplaats 17, Antwerp (inaugurated in 2009).
Later in 2009, she returned to Brussels and moved in with her godmother, Anne Weis, whose work with 100% natural materials and pigments had a strong influence on her. This shaped Maïlys’ own sensitivity toward eco-conscious material, craftsmanship, authenticity and love for nature even more.
In 2011 she traveled to the Canary Islands and worked on the Island of La Gomera as a resident artist, contributing to artistic projects like mural fresco painting. In 2016 she had a second opportunity for a artist residency on the Island of Tenerife.
In 2016, she began a training as a dental technician (2016–2020), where she further refined her aesthetic precision and technical mastery through another discipline rooted in form, detail, and craftsmanship.
Throughout the years, Maïlys has developed a practice in which creativity, study, and introspection remain central. She continuously deepens her knowledge and knowledge of materials & techniques, concepts & themes of daily actuality. She has a heart for activism and explores our lost link to nature and the wildlife, which she translates into a very personal and poetic interpretation through a work of art.
